Ingresa a “Calendar” y registrate!

Well I just wanted to share an email I sent my family last time we visited Morocco. The most recent visit, approximately a month ago, was very delightful but time didn’t allow for another visit to the amazing marketplace, The Medina. The last time we had the priviledge of performing in Morocco we spent a day exploring the outdoor market. I was in the process of creating my first tribal costume and this place was definitely a tribal treasure land…………………………………………………………………………………
So after a long bus ride, and a few camel rides later…………no really we stopped on the way and of course Petite Camilla and I volunteered to ride one, we finally arrived. We immediately all split up and each ventured off into the unknown land of haggling, ancient artifacts, and rich culture. As we were approaching the marketplace there were several spots where men were playing Zurnas while cobras were dancing….. Ummmmmmmmmm not ok with me. Very scary. I hate snakes. They are a recurring theme in my nightmares. So it was very overwhelming…………………but quite intriguing at the same time.
Then this little boy, about 7 years old started following me from the
entrance all the way till we got to the marketplace. He wanted to sell me this little drum thing for 20 dirham’s. He stayed by my side for about 10 minutes. “20 dirham’s please Madame.” It was so cute, but a little irritating after a while. Finally I gave him 2 Euros, because he clearly earned it, he was extremely dedicated…….it was quite amazing. But the sad
thing is is that when I gave him the money he just took it, turned around and trotted the other way. That’s it buddy??? I was getting kind of used to you around. Ok, anyway, let the shopping begin!!!!! So now it’s just Petite Jamilla and me. We venture around the dusty, stuffy corridors……upstairs downstairs upstairs downstairs. You can’t walk two feet without
someone eagerly trying to hustle their wares. Miles said to inquire about
the price then cut that in half, and ask for the merchandise at that price, look uninterested, and then walk away. It worked for me every time!!!! I got a REALLY neat leather purse, a couple tribal pendants, a belt, two REALLY old tribal pieces, and then the grand finale………… drum roll please. Throughout this whole excursion I was constantly eyeing these REALLY old tribal pieces called Fibulas. Fibulae were originally used in Greek and Roman dress to hold capes and other garments in place and are still widely used throughout North Africa. So I was asking the price of these pieces at each booth, there was a very limited amount in the marketplace, mind you, and they were apparently very expensive. Around 1,000 to 2,000 dirham’s, which is about 100 or 200 Euros, too much. So we continued to wonder around and we ended up in an area where there was jewelry that was much older and larger. Once again I saw more Fibulae, these were larger and more lavish than the previous ones. There was a particular pair that were awesome and the nice man said they were 10 dirham’s a gram. So he weighed them and they ended up being 3,000 dirham’s, I think that’s around $800, too much. I asked if he would bargain and he said that that was pretty much a fixed price. So I sulked and continued to admire them as Petite Jamilla bought some things……..and then we continued on our way. We snaked around another corridor and ended up at a booth that the previous man also worked at. I bought some pieces for a good price thanked him and moved on. We continued on our way and ran into Issam, whom had purchased an authentic Moroccan outfit, with shoes. He was wearing it. Absolutely hilarious. Shortly after, I said to P.J., ” That’s it.” I wanna go back to that place and ask for those Fibulae at half price. I’ve given it some thought. Those pieces are old, authentic, unique and if sold at half the price………..well worth it. So we went back and the man, Mohammed, wasn’t around so his brother called him on his cell phone and shortly after, he arrived. I said
yo I’m gonna offer you one price and that’s it. I’ll take both those pieces for 1,500 dirham’s. He had his brother weigh them again, they discussed it and came back with 2,500 and I said no I can’t do it. Bye bye. He said ok what’s your final price. I said 1,500 that’s it!!!! After back and forth and forth and back I finally got what I wanted. He wrapped my two new babies up as I handed him my rent money. I waved goodbye and was convinced that I had walked away with the most lavish awesome pair of Fibulae in the Medina Marketplace!!! They are huge!! I love them!!!! As we head to our bus these
men insist on placing two monkeys on my shoulders for a photo opp. But of course they want some cash. Can’t do it!! Get these kids off me. They look hungry . We arrive to the bus on time, pile in and head off down the dusty road back to Casablanca………….
