A few insights about the Japanese tour from one of our newest cast members in English & in German below:

The Bellydance Superstars in Japan, May 2011

    Wow.

Shivani, Edenia, Victoria and me (Inka) may attend the world famous Bombay Bellywood tour in Japan! What a chance, what a step! For us all it’s a big challenge and very exciting. Until now we could have just admired the Bellydance Superstars from far away and now we’re participating ourselves?! Amazing.

We had one week to get familiar with the show program and the choreographies. After three days of intensive training with Stefanya we met the other dancers to rehearse altogether under the direction of Sabah. The first meeting with the girls was awesome. A reunion of the Superstar family! Giggling, twittering, dancing… The end of a full training day was all about sewing costumes and studying choreographies (horizontal!) back at the hotel. All for the dance… all for the big show… I loved it!

It was a lot of fun to explore all those funny utensiles! Ribbons, fan veils, dandiya sticks, even hula hoops were part of the show! All this was accompanied by a huge range of dance styles… Indian dance, bhangra, melaya, folclore, classical oriental dance and more. The girls of the group are breathtaking. Each of them charismatic, each of them with her personal touch. It was amazing to regard them up close during the rehearsals and to talk with them about dance and about their way of life. The rehearsals passed in a blur. Of course, there were also strange moments in which everything seemed to be impossible but with the willing help of the other girls and Miles Copelands’ soothing German words ‘Alles gut’ it wasn’t hard to keep on going and to give the best you can for that what you love.

Before departure day the last shoppings were made. Everything what a stage heart desires: extra hair, curling iron, huge eyelashes, ‘Russian Red’ lipstick. For those who were afraid of radioactive contamination, canned food and a lot of water were added on their shopping lists. Everyone had her or his own way to deal with those dramatic circumstances in Japan.
    Finally! Departure day!

After the arrival at the airport in LA ‘the icing on the Bellydance Superstar cake’ came along. What is a bellydancer without a drummer? Issam Houshan! With strawberries in his hand and a big smile on his face he approached us. ‘I know this guy’, crossed my mind. So far only as a spectator but he convinces from far away as well as from close. The girls, one after another, gave him a big hug… again there is this pleasant family feeling. I myself feel more like a newborn. The group is complete – let’s fly to Japan!

We didn’t dance so much in the airplaine. Watching movies, noshing, reading, and sleeping were the main activities. And the first contacts with Japanese people! What a funny folk… very pleasant. You say ‘Konnichiwaa’ and bow politely when you want to say ‘hallo’. As a snack you can nibble Nori Leaves (dried and roasted seaweed) which are also used to stick rice and fish together for the delicious Sushi rolls. Next to me there is a born- and-bred Japanese guy who orders ‘saki’, apparently the most popular alcoholic drink in Japan, served hot or cold.

It was so funny to change flight in Tokyo… imagine around 20 crazy people with a huge amount of luggage, hula hoops and a leader with a highly visible hat running around the
airport to reach for their final destination flight. The view on Osaka by night was stunning. The third largest city of Japan sparkles, twinkles, a spectacle of light. My heart jumps… here we are having our first big show…
    Succeeded. Osaka.

    A German welcome in Japan

‘The hotel is beautiful! Wuhuuu!’ Quick and happy room observation – sleep. After an excellent breakfast at the hotel we were chauffeured to the dance studio ‘Freude’ to meet for our final dress rehearsal day. Yes, really, it’s called ‘Freude’! The owner told me he was inspired by the German language. I felt blessed. ‘This must be a sign that everything is fine.’ ;-) At night we had our first Japanese dinner. Noodle soup, tempura and hot saki. The girls are so funny! You can laugh a lot with them and forget all about your show worries.
    Osaka Castle and show premiere!

‘Did I pack everything? Make-up, costumes, snacks, emergency sewing kit, tooth brush?’ The big performance was getting closer and closer. Before we drove to the theater, Miles wanted to take some group pictures in front of the Osaka Castle. What a great building! Once the pointed main tower must have been destroyed by a lightning strike. After reconstruction the castle is now used as a museum and tourist attraction. Stefanya had her picture taken, in her arms an iguana, which you could admire (with the owner) on the palace square. Funny…

But no time to waist! The stage rehearsals were calling! After a little lunch we had to sign around 200 show programs. My picture next to all the other Superstars?! Exciting… What else is left to do? Make-up! Arranging costumes backstage. ‘Green veil on the right, orange and violet on the left, sticks right, Jilina costume left, etc.’
7 o’clock in the evening. The first show starts. Yihaa!

Cast on Stage for PreShow Photo Shoot

Miles’ voice sounds: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Bombay Bellywood!!!’ Ok, I’m right in the middle of this world famous spectacle. It works, I’m on stage with 12 other wonderful dancers who shine, everything’s shining right now, an incredible energy! It feels like being in the middle of a horse herd. Especially the Bollywood opening is a very dynamic piece. The Indian, glittering skirts are flying, the sticks are banging, everything is moving. A wonderful experience.

    Tokyo!

Ways to kill time while waiting for a train 1) Have a silly photoshoot

    2) Learn a new dance... i think we look pretty good

The next day we jetted to Tokyo with the express train. Around 500 next show programs had to be signed during the ride. Factory work. :-) In Tokyo there was waiting a charity event for us, dedicated to the victims of the Tsunami. On the program: photoshoot, drum solo performance, TV interview.

Everyting’s fine but there is huge excitement in my stomach.. Seven dancers of the Superstar troup attended the performance to Issam Houshan’s ‘Party Drum’. On stage we stood in a half circle and everyone of us could perform her own little drum solo one after another. It was amazing – the girls behind you, cheering and ululating, the audience in front of you, clapping and shouting… unforgettable. For dinner we were invited to an Indian restaurant. Hmmm…. delicious! During we had some rice and curry Miles Copeland gathered momentum. Wow, this man can tell stories with a lot of fire! We had so much fun and I think the other restaurant guests, too. Recovering.

Performing with local bellydancers to support tsunami relief efforts

After all this activity during the last weeks we had two days off to relax before the final shows. Some stayed at the hotel, some went out to see temples or the shopping districtsof Tokyo. Lolita dressed dancers with green tea KitKats came back to tell their funny shopping experiences. What a funny crowd. In the evening some went out to a karaoke bar. You could tell the next morning that this must have been a funny and long night.

    Showrun!

Our final show weekend could start – of course with some new highlights! Both shows were filmed on Sunday and Victoria and me could take part in the ‘Party Drum’ piece! This meant that we could perform a little, individual drum solo! Yeah! How happy and excited newborns we were. Between the two shows we had time for some interviews with Japanese TV shows and magazines. Signing more show programs! I couldn’t count them anymore… 200-500-1000?

After four great and successful shows in Tokyo the first thing we had to do was to raise our glasses. Beer, champagne, saki, … it didn’t matter. Party! We made it! Yes! The Japanese people are so cute, everyone of us dancers got a little thank-you card. ‘Cheers’ to all the lovely dancers! ‘Cheers’ to Miles Copeland, who made this all possible! ‘Cheers’ to the dance.

My personal highlight on this tour was our final elevator ride. Jayna felt squeezed in this 30 person loaded hot box, so Brian, our audio technician started to chant ‘Om’ to calm her down. Everyone joined. After some of them we finally sang ‘Row row row your boat’ on full blast. The Japanese people looked a bit weird as the door opened to give them a ride. An elevator full of loud singing people. Very nice.

Finally we all came back home safe and nonirradiated. This trip remains unforgettable for me. Something, what I would like to ‘relive’. You can feel that this place is open for creativity. Cheers. Many thanks with a little hope to see you all soon!

Bellydance Superstars in Japan, Mai 2011

    Wow.
Unglaublich.
mitmachen!

Alles

    man liebt.

Alles, was das
Bühnenherz begehrt: Extrahaare, Lockenstab, künstliche Wimpern, ‘Russian Red’
Lippenstift.

hinzu. Was ist eine Bauchtänzerin ohne einen Trommler? Issam Houshan!

lustiges Volk… sehr angenehm.

Hier
werden wir unsere erste große Show haben…

    Geschafft. Osaka.
    ‘Unser Hotel ist wunderschön! Juhuu!’
    miteinander. Das muntert auf.

    Schloss Osaka und Showpremiere!
‘Hab ich alles eingepackt? Make-up, Kostüme, Snacks, Notnähzeug, Zahnbürste?’
Lustig, lustig… Aber schnell weiter zum Theater! Die Bühnenproben rufen,
Soundcheck, Lichtproben! Nach einem kleinen Mittagssnack mussten geschätzte
500 Showprogramme signiert werden. Mein Bild neben allen anderen Superstars!?
Aufregend…

Darbietung… Aufregend… Es kann losgehen! Yihaa!

Miles Stimme erklingt: ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Bombay Bellywood!!!’

Fabrikarbeit. In Tokyo

    Showrun!
einspringen!
konnten! Yeah!
Zeitschriften. Showprogramme signieren, Make-up nachziehen, Haare richten!

diesen Erfolg. Saki, Sekt, Bier, Wasser, völlig egal… Feiern! We did it!

Jayna bekam
Platzangst in dieser 30-Mann gefüllten heißen Box, also stimmte Brian, unser

Cheers! :-)

    copelandasst 2:44 pm on October 25, 2010 | 1 Permalink | Reply

Last night “Jerseylicious”, the top rated show on the Style Channel, filmed a segment with the BDSS in Morristown.   Look for an airing in February.  Shown here are some behind the scenes’ snaps.  Chris Lamson (the producer) explaining what was going to happen;  BDSS group shot, Moria having microphone attached; Moria made up; Nathalie, backstage with Stefanya, Rebecca, Petite Jamilla and Lauren, and a final group shot with the Jerseylicious ladies.

From the Desk of Miles Copeland: Welcome to Bombay Bellywood!

    copelandasst 2:29 pm on October 12, 2010 | 7 Permalink | Reply
Tags: bellydance, , Bollywood, Bombay Bellywood, Indian Dance

I have always taken the time to read what people are saying about the BDSS, even ones that critique from a biased position or have never even seen
a show. One can always learn from critique – both good and bad (But all critique that we have gotten for this tour so far has been very good).  One result has been to realize that this venture will always be about moving forward; to push the envelope ever further, as expectations do not decrease with time; they increase.  To just maintain what we have achieved, we have to be better and offer something new each time. To actually advance our position we have to be even better than that.  In a world of short attention spans, that is the harsh reality.

I also know that to keep a strong team of dancers together, the dancers themselves have to be inspired.  Asking them to do basically the same thing each show eventually takes the fun out of it and stymies a dancer’s growth.  Lets face it: Dancing is a passion more than a job, so inspiration and fun are very much a part of what it’s all about. I have also learned that a pro dancer wants to push the envelope, as in any other art form.  —Seven years into the BDSS makes the producer’s task ever more daunting – pleasing both the audience as well as the dancers – even as some dancers drop out due to age, stamina, marriage, or other personal commitments.  So in reality a dance show – indeed, ANY dance show – in many ways has to be about new blood as well as new ideas; true for Riverdance as it is for the BDSS.  I think it is fair to say that in the area of new ideas we far surpass Riverdance, though they are far more prone to bring in new dancers than we are.  We like a balance between our veteran dancers as well as new ones.

With the new show we felt it was time for a more radical change – a change to reinvigorate the team and re-excite the challenge generally.  We brought in outside choreographers, as well as gave more opportunities to troupe members who had been itching to contribute more.  AND, quite unexpectedly, we brought in our first male dancer, Samir - so impressed were we with his performance at the Raqs LA audition.  For two years, he was a principle performer with the Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil production of “O”.  He dances in an Indian style as only he can, with stunning body movements.  It turns out that he is a bundle of multi-talents. He choreographed three pieces to stunning affect and gave our dancers an opportunity to perform at the Cirque level with a super pro.  Wait ’til you see his drum solo with Issam!

In developing the Bellydance meets Bollywood theme – (we call it “Bellywood”)  - an obvious choice was to invite Meera to join us, as she is strong in both Bellydance and Indian dance.  It turns out to be a great choice, as not only is she a gifted dancer with deep “chops” in Indian dance especially, but she is a fireball of positive energy.  Not only did she carry much of the Indian choreography load, but she helped with music and costuming.  As a performer in this show, no question about it – this lady is a star and now, we are proud to say, a Bellydance Superstar!

Most of the BDSS have had a background  that included Indian dance, so developing along Bellywood lines was not too difficult.  We had a “Bellywood” piece in the Raqs Carnival show, as can be seen on the “Live In Paris” DVD, and the tribal team has always used Indian dance within our past shows…but this time they dug even deeper.  Moria spent three months in India training last year and contributed to the tribal choreography that was being developed largely by Kami.  Again – this show developed more as a team with more varied inputs than we have had before, so I strongly doubt any critique will be heard that we are doing basically the same thing yet again.  Yes, this really is a change you can believe in.

One noticeable fact about this show is that the “highs” are higher  than ever so that once again the bar has been raised for all to see.  Want to know where Bellydance is at its highest level?  Well, this is it. Petite Jamilla with her spinning piece, as well as Sabah with her belly ballet piece – always favorites in previous shows – prove that they can push the envelope even higher, even if one thought that they had already reached the top plateau.  No – Bellydance as an art, so far as we have seen, has no boundaries – and that must be exciting for any dancer wanting to make a career in bellydance.

Another important point is that ALL of the BDSS dancers are at a very high level that enables the choreographers to stretch their talent and creativity – I think as a complete troupe,  it is the strongest team we have ever had – and lord knows we have had some great dancers in the BDSS. Bozenka, who choreographed the first “oriental” troupe piece was not the only choreographer to note the strength of this team and the liberating pleasure to have a team that can actually do what you create.

Meanwhile, some have suggested to me that we have “lost” some of our stars, which makes me laugh as I remember the Habibi Magazine article some years ago that said there were “no stars in the BDSS”.  The recommendation was to hire some “real names”, some of which turned out to be dead.  It’s true to say that outside their local scene, no one had ever heard of Rachel Brice, Sharon Kihara, Sonia, Amar Gamal, Jillina and even Ansuya.  Now, they are globally recognized bellydance stars, and well-deserved thanks to their talent and the profile given them by being part of the BDSS.  No question that Petite Jamilla, Sabah, Kami, and Moria have deservedly graduated into the star league, as one can clearly see on the “Live From Shanghai” DVD that is currently being played by many of the public broadcasting TV stations across the country.

Meera and Samir will certainly capture imaginations on this tour, but that’s not all.  Our “new blood” is blossoming into stardom as well.  Stefanya steps up on this tour to carry front line solos with beauty, grace and unmistakable talent. Nathalie, Lauren, and Colleen in cabaret, and Sabrina in tribal prove the value of dancers who really know what they are doing and have had the wealth of experience the BDSS has given them to show real stars in the making.  Our newest members – April Rose in Tribal and Rebecca in cabaret – have hit the ground running to an impressive degree and will undoubtedly rise in the ranks of  the world’s Bellydance stars.  When I pow wow with Issam Houshan, a man of deeper experience working with dancers in this art than anyone I know, and he tells me that this team is a real winner AND the best yet, I know I am not quite the crazy guy many have thought me to be.

The truth is – ALL the BDSS dancers in this show are stars – even if it will take the public time to know some of them better.   Just like in the beginning, and to the chagrin of some – when I had the audacity to call the troupe “Bellydance Superstars”, I made the choice NOT for “names” but for dancing  ability, and something that told me that this dancer had it in her to be a star in the big world out there.  For this show, the same is true. I say again – watching this show and the ability it takes to pull it off – no question this is our strongest team yet.   So in very real terms, this show is the pinnacle of Bellydance as an art form in the mainstream today.  In it, you will see current stars and the stars of tomorrow.  If the BDSS has any lasting legacy, it will be that it brought to the world a long line of dancers who deserved to be seen, appreciated and eventually hailed as great stars of this dance. That will be our part in enabling Bellydance to live forever as an important dance art, in equal terms with such dance arts as the ballet.

Stefanya on Germanys Next Top Model!

    copelandasst 11:05 am on April 27, 2010 | 4 Permalink | Reply

The episode that Stefanya did for “Germany’s Next Top Model” with Heidi Klum is Episode 10 and will be aired on May 6 on TV station Pro7.  In it, Stefanya demonstrates the finer points and sensuality of the art of Bellydannce.  It was Heidi’s idea as a great way to help the models become more sensual and comfortable with their body movements and she participated in the whole process wearing a BDSS costume along with all the other models.  It was filmed at a mansion in Beverly Hills.  From May 6, the show can be viewed at http://www.prosieben.de/tv/germanys-next-topmodel/
